[Verse 1]
D Bm G D
A stranger came to old London town
A D
On a Christmas morn’
D Bm G D
And his eyes were soft as the snow coming down
A D
His smile as gentle as dawn
Bm F#m
All around there were bright Christmas windows
F#m C#7 F#m
But he scarcely noticed their glow
F#m E D A
‘Cause his heart went out to a little match girl
E7
A ( A7 )
Kneeling there in the snow

[Chorus]
D G D Em
Oh merry Christmas, oh merry Christmas
  Bm F#7
Bm ( A )
Oh season of heavenly peace

[Verse 2]
D Bm
Her clothes were threadbare
G D
And many a patch
A D
Caught the wintery storm
D Bm G D
And her trembling fingers kept striking a match
A D
Trying so to keep warm
Bm F#m
From each house she could hear happy voices
F#m C#7 F#m
As the smoke from the chimneys would curl
F#m E D A
But the doors were (a) barred and the hearts were closed
E7
A ( A7 )
To the little match girl

[Chorus]
D G D Em
Oh merry Christmas, oh merry Christmas
  Bm F#7
Bm ( A )
Oh season of heavenly peace

[Verse 3]
D Bm G D
Her last match flickered due just a faint blow
A D
When heaven heard her despair
D Bm G D
And the stranger fashioned a gown from the snow
A D
A cape of sunbeams to wear
Bm F#m
Then he cried as he cried once before
F#m C#7 F#m
As he slowly took her away
F#m E D A
Oh forgive them they know not what they do
E7
A ( A7 )
But they will know some day

[Chorus]
D G D Em
Oh merry Christmas, oh merry Christmas
Bm F#7 Bm
Oh season of heavenly peace
