How to transpose a chord sheet

Learn semitones and how to move every chord in a song to a new key while preserving chord quality.

Transposition moves every note and chord by the same interval. Musicians use it to fit a singer’s range or choose more comfortable instrument shapes.

Semitones

Each neighboring note step is one semitone. Moving C up one semitone gives C#, and one more gives D. Apply the same movement to every chord.

Chord quality stays

If Am moves up two semitones, it becomes Bm. The minor quality remains. The same principle applies to sevenths and extensions.

Slash chords

For C/E, transpose both C and E. The Cifra Agora transposer handles both notes automatically.

Transposition and vocal range

The easiest instrumental key is not always the best singing key. Consider both the lowest and highest melody notes. A small change may move an entire chorus into a much more comfortable range.

Check the result after transposing

Play at least one verse and chorus. The tool moves chord symbols accurately, but the musical decision about the best range remains yours.

Checklist before saving the new version

  • Confirm the number of semitones moved.
  • Check that both notes in slash chords were transposed.
  • Choose sharp or flat spellings that fit the new key.
  • Test the lowest and highest vocal notes.

When the new key creates awkward guitar shapes, compare the same result with a capo. The most comfortable and best-sounding version is often a combination of transposition and capo position.
