About this tool

Change the key of a complete chord sheet without editing each chord. The tool identifies harmonic lines and preserves lyrics.

How to use

  1. Paste the chord sheet.
  2. Use +1 or -1 semitone or choose any interval.
  3. Review, copy, download or export to PDF.

What transposition preserves

Transposition moves every pitch by the same number of semitones. The relationships between chords remain intact, so the song keeps its harmonic structure at a new pitch level.

Chord quality is preserved: major stays major, minor stays minor, and extensions such as 7, maj7, sus4 and add9 stay attached to the new root.

Slash chords and spelling

A chord such as C/E contains two pitches that must move: the C root and the E bass note. The tool transposes both parts so slash chords remain musically consistent.

You can also favor sharps or flats. In some keys one spelling is much easier to read and better reflects standard notation practice.

How to choose a new key

For vocals, move one semitone at a time until both high and low notes feel comfortable. On guitar, also consider open chord shapes and whether a capo could preserve familiar fingering.

Play through the whole song after changing key. A key that feels great in the chorus can make the verse too low, so judge the full vocal range.
