How to figure out song chords by ear

A practical method using bass notes, chord quality, cadences and musical context.

Figuring out chords becomes easier when you split the task into smaller questions. Instead of naming a complete chord immediately, find a stable bass note first and then decide whether the harmony sounds major, minor or more complex.

Find the pulse and change points

Tap the beat and mark where the harmony changes. Knowing exactly when to listen greatly reduces the amount of audio you need to compare.

Listen to the bass

The bass often suggests the root, but inversions are common. C/E is still a C chord even though E is in the bass, so treat the lowest note as evidence rather than a guaranteed answer.

Test major and minor

Once you have a possible root, play major and minor versions over the recording. One usually fits clearly better. Investigate sevenths and extensions only after the basic quality is established.

Use the key as context

Knowing the key narrows the possibilities. In C major, C, Dm, Em, F, G and Am are natural candidates, although borrowed and chromatic chords can still occur.

Confirm in sequence

A single chord can be ambiguous. Play several chords before and after it and listen to the motion. Automatic detection can provide the first hypothesis, which your ear then confirms.

Practice with short loops

Loop two to four seconds around each change. Short sections let your ear compare alternatives without relying on memory. Keep your instrument volume low enough to continue hearing the recording bass and vocal clearly.

Over time, try identifying functions — rest, preparation and tension — before absolute chord names. This habit helps you predict likely movement inside a key and makes learning unfamiliar songs much faster.
